INTERESTED IN DECREASING THE AMOUNT OF FOOD WASTE YOU SEND TO THE LANDFILL? READ ON!

KEEPING FOOD SCRAPS OUT OF the LANDFILL IS IMPORTANT

One of the most significant actions we can take as individuals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is to keep our food scraps out of the landfill, where they will convert to methane gas, one of the most potent gases known to contribute to climate change.

Sorting out your food scraps for composting also generates local revenue, new jobs, and valuable resources. That valuable resource is compost, a nutrient-dense soil amendment that can be used to improve soil health and provide healthier plant production, retain carbon, and improve water absorption to reduce stormwater runoff.

The food scrap carts are located near the recycling area of the Farmers Market pavilion.

When dropping off your food scraps, carefully place your scraps into the collection cart, taking care to keep material from spilling on the ground. Please close the lid after use so animals will not be able to access the collection carts.

If you see an issue with a collection container, contact:
RRRASOC (education@rrrasoc.org) or My Green Michigan (office@mygreenmi.com).

tips for collecting food scraps

Find a conveniently sized, lidded food scrap container. Check around your home for a container you already have. To absorb moisture, line the bottom of the container with a sheet of newspaper.

Place the container on the kitchen counter close to where you prepare food. Remember, if it’s close at hand, the more likely you’ll use it.

If it grows, it goes!

Acceptable food scraps include fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats, bones, eggshells, coffee grounds and filters, tea leaves and tea bags, paper napkins and paper towels (free of chemical cleaners or additives), breads, grains, and spoiled food from the refrigerator.
